2024 WAFCONQ: Super Falcons To Face Cape Verde In 2nd Round

    James AgberebiBy James AgberebiSeptember 26, 2023Updated:September 26, 202313 Comments2 Mins Read

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will take on Cape Verde in the second round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The pairing was confirmed after Cape Verde defeated Liberia over two legs to progress into the final qualifying round.

In the first round second-leg tie in Monrovia on Tuesday, Cape Verde won 3-2.

Cape Verde had won the first-leg 3-0 to progress 6-2 on aggregate.

The Super Falcons did not feature in the first round qualifiers, after securing a walkover against São Tomé and Principe who withdrew before the first-leg.

Meanwhile in other first round, second leg fixtures, Kenya pulled a surprise after knocking out Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon 4-3 on penalty shootout.

Cameroon won the first-leg 1-0 at home while Kenya edged the reverse fixture by the same scoreline.

In another surprise result, Tanzania cancelled out a 2-0 first-leg loss to Côte d’Ivoire and went on to win 4-3 also on penalty kicks.

At the 2022 WAFCON held also in Morocco, the Super Falcons finished fourth.

The nine-time African champions reached the round of 16 at this year’s FIFA women’s World Cup and lost on penalties to England.

      Wow…Kenya booting out Cameroon.
      Tanzania eliminating Cote d’Ivoire.

Female football is really growing on the continent.

      Nigeria beware….!!!

The second round 1st leg is November and still those nff crooks are still negotiating with the coach. Hope an agreement will be reached by then.

The Falconets have a 2024 U20 WC qualifier game AWAY (so would need about 2-3 days travel and acclimation) in about 10 days – and the useless NFF have only just gotten around to appointing a coach today.

Meanwhile, there’s been NO LIST of invited players, NO camp and NO training. While Danjuma should be able to cobble something resembling a team in a jiffy, the NWFL league is on break and so the players are likely NOT match-fit.

Even though it’s supposedly “only Mauritius”, preparation is a HABIT and this is DISGRACEFUL even for the inept NFF.

@Kim, the Super Falcons have the two legs of the second round of the 2024 Olympics Games BETWEEN OCTOBER 23-31  against Ethiopia (with the first leg away in Addis Ababa).

We should have played a friendly when Sao Tome withdrew from the first round.Administrative lapse by the football authorities.
The team has new additions, had they played friendlies in that window that would have prepared them for the clash against Cape Verde a side with players that could hurt the super falcons.
I hope we don’t underrate them because we may come up with a big shocker!

Nigeria’s and SA’s impressive performance at the WC has really stirred up African countries to focus more on and take football more seriously. Even Ghana too has hired a foreign female gaffer who has been churning out impressive results lately. There’s fire on the mountain o. The gap between male and female matches on the continent in terms of competition is closing tighter and tighter by the day. We’re now even losing age-grade finals, something previously taken for granted as a straight win in women football in Africa.

CIV that eliminated us for an Olympic ticket dumped out? A traditional powerhouse in female football?

And Cameroun that’s always a bone in our neck? A team that got to the women WC knockout round in 2019 and only lost narrowly to England?

Anyone still thinking the WAFCON trophy or 2024 Paris Olympic ticket will be a stroll in the park is hallucinating. And the NFF morons are the chief dreamers.

Plus Cape Verde is never a push over in anything sports. Beating Liberia 3-0 at home and 3-2 away. If that doesn’t smell a formidable opponent waiting, I don’t know what else is. Meanwhile our team has been inactive since the WC. Pheeew!Gusau.

Ghana hired its coach in 2022, well before Nigeria and South Africa’s performances at the 2023 WC. Ghana is NOT “churning out” any results that’s substantially different from the results they’d been “churning out” prior to hiring the coach. However, to Ghana’s credit, unlike Nigeria they’ve have written a comprehensive female development plan and are trying to build a long-term program for which they’ve gotten aid from the French FF to implement the program.

I hope those that would say CAF is biased by not letting so called west African giants participate in the next WAFCON will see that female football is on the rise.

No CIV, no Cameroon after only first round

I hope this our NFF AJĘWOMASAN the debtor, will organize at least two to three friendlies for Super Falcons.

They still don’t know what they are doing. I am wondering why the government can not scrap the current NFF. They are incompetent fellows kę.

At this point, Falcons should have grade A friendlies before the Wafcon qualifiers.

Super Falcons doesn’t have a coach at the moment that shows who NFF members are.

I think President Tinubu loves sports, and I don’t know why he hasn’t said a single word about NFF.

I am still waiting and watching the new president very closely, though. Is he competent enough to handle Nigeria as a country? Hmmm, time will tell. I hope we are not having another Buhari in Tinubu oooo. Fingers crossed. Good luck to our Super Falcons. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

The WAFCON qualifiers have already started. Meanwhile, we cannot play Grade A friendlies outside of FIFA Windows, and all of the next few FIFA Windows are being utilized for WAFCON and Olympics Games qualifiers.

Why does the CSN report not tell readers at least dates for the Nigeria – Cape Verde games and where they’ll be played, instead of longwinding, old stories?
