Andersson Linked With Vacant Super Eagles Head Coach Job

Adeboye AmosuBy Adeboye AmosuAugust 18, 202461 Comments1 Min Read

Former Sweden head coach, Janne Andersson is reportedly set to be named head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Andersson’s appointment is coming more than two months after George Finidi quit the post.

It’s the first time the 61-year-old will be working in Africa.

Andersson was in charge of the Swedish national team for seven years, between 2016 to 2023.

The tactician quit the post following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2024 European Championship.

He actually had a successful start to his time in charge of Sweden.

Andersson qualified Sweden for its first FIFA World Cup in 12 years (2018) by eliminating Netherlands and Italy in the qualifiers.

Sweden experienced its most successful World Cup campaign since 1994 under its tutelage winning Group F ahead of South Korea, Mexico and then reigning champions Germany.

They were eliminated in the quarter-final by England.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Benin Republic and Rwanda in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.

BUT WHY NIGERIA ALWAYS LIKE TO BE DELAYING THINGS.
I COULD ALSO REMEMBERED THAT BUHARI DELAYED THE APPOINTMENT OF MINISTERS DURING HIS FIRST TENURE OF HIS REGIME. WHILE HIS PARTY CLAIMING THAT HE WANT TO SELECT BETTER PEOPLE. BUT AT THE END OF THE EIGHT YEARS, HE END UP IN SUPERLATIVE FAILURE, LEAVING THE WHOLE NIGERIA INTO PRECARIOUS DIFFICULT.
LIKEWISE ALSO, THE WAY NFF IS GOING BY DELAYING THE APPOINTMENT OF FOREIGN COACH, THEY WILL END UP IN EMPLOYING A WRONG CANDIDATE AND FAIL TO QUALIFY FOR BOTH AFCON & WORLD CUP, PUTTING THE WHOLE NIGERIA INTO DASH

The situation is such that in the absence of a coach, former Super Eagles coach Austine Eguavoen takes charge SE coach for at least next month’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.

Eguaveon is already at the wheel but as fans, we need to be pushing for team selection, by that i mean Eguaveon should begin sending invites to the lads who will prosecute the match on the 7th of Sept, that should be 14 days from now.

I learnt he is doing that already because of the importance attached to the matches. I have my fears though.

Make una listen to @Gbenro. Gbenro, you think it’s easy to assemble a winning team within 2weeks? My brother, i know the NFF constitution has enabled coachie Egu to lead his lads but it’s not going to be a walk in the park.

Rwanda just listed their team are we here waiting for Coach Eguaveon to name his squad with all the encompassing noise. And should our darling team fails to qualify next week, we will still remain on csn making usual noise.

Na small thing seperate una with some aboki wey no dey reason well. It is not every nonsense that demands explanations, if you were watching football in the late 80s or 90s you’ll not be underrating a talented Nigeria. The fact that you were born in the worst Era of Nigeria sports that is why you will see Afcon qualification as difficult as Mount Everest. Very soon person go leave this forum make una dey figure out una gullibility because you people mostly define confidence as bragging due to your inferiority complex and poor education.

Andersen is a good coach. He’s worked with world-class players and will know how to utilize our rich tapestry of playing resources best. The previous coaches were lost on how to make the most of or perfectly combine the talents at their disposal. He’ll be impartial and merit-driven (I hope the NFF gives him a free hand), having never worked in Africa or ‘Nigerianized” on “how we do things here.”

I’m confident our 2026 WC campaign will be back on track. I’m confident the SE’s quality of team play on the field will match the individual qualities and profiles of the players on paper.

First, we start with the Afcon qualifiers and show how it’s done with Rwanda and Benin, coincidentally also in our WC group. We set the tone this September of better things to come by the next round of WCQ in March.

Curiously, Nigerian teams rarely miss out on football fiestas hosted in the US. In fact, we’ve had our biggest successes on the global stage on American soil (USA 94 and Atlanta 96). I doubt 2026 will be different.

So the news is not even confirmed. Who is the next coach that will be linked to SE? I’m still thinking…….. NFF don’t want to pay salary for scouting service and etcetera prior to matches that is why we’re witnessing this delay antics. Does it mean that countries who hired coaches before qualifiers and doing early preparations are fools??? Nigeria and money phobia is like 5&6 in all sector starting from police to Politicians. May God save the nation from Greedy leaders and enough of this distractions make them do their worse!!!!!

      Jan Olof Andersson.
Can Jan Olof give Nigerians Jollof football? I hereby bestow upon him the nickname JOLLOF.
For him to have been a former coach of Sweden speaks to his quality. Sweden will not hire an Okrika coach at any time. They always go for the best their money can buy.
He has the tactical ability we need. But how easy is it to produce Jollof rice in a chaotic kitchen where necessary ingredients and other supplies are not provided? Can he produce working with this NFF?
If Jollof ends up in the hot seat, I hope that his salary will be paid directly by the presidency. I wish players bonuses were also paid directly by the presidency. No money should be routed thru the NFF.
      Jollof, welcome in advance.

Maybe that person I’ve lived in a French country for too long that is why he or she will type in French. But you’ll reply them in English to get themselves. Non Afcon qualification was a past accident due to Mal administration at its peak from the bodies managing our football affairs, we have moved on from that time so should we now start harbouring afcon phobia. When did we become Eritea or Ethiopia that we will not be figuring out this Algebra??? Nigeria we hail thee indeed!!!

We dont need this type of coaches at all, Nbanu!not in this moment, I think siasia is the best option for now, he should be assisted by salisu and aigbogun who have been asistant to rohr for a longtime, to be honest finidi team didnt do much bad, his team played very well against south africa, if not for badluck, chukueze almost gave us victory and he was rubbed when the ref deny us a penalty when fikayo was brought down, I was among those calling him names for not starting eighter boniface or moffi ahead of onuachu in the southafrica game, but after the benin republic game I realised he was right when he said we should allow him do his job, boniface and moffi are just one of those 419 yahoo yahoo european scam players, we only have osihmen, and if possible isaac sucess in addition to unuachu our trailer striker, until proven otherwise the rest are just scam,

His team suffered in their second game when he yielded to fans advise to drop unuacho for our bonaboy or eddiemuffy that is yet to arive in america after 5 years of free flight ticket, the result proved us wrong, the injury to fikayo didnt help in the second game, the midfield lost balance, onyedika despite scored a very wonderful goal, which I very much apreciate, but he is not good enough for the super eagles, his present was not felt at all, he is so inexperienced and always clashing with his fellow midfielders he contributed nothing to improve our recovery and progression, , you dont invite a jupiler abi na jupitar belgium league player to the eagles like that at list not in the midfield or diffense, attack is managable,, unless the player have played in the Nigerian league with alot of africa football experience, fikayo brother tom dele bashiru will do better than onyedika if they will give him a chance, the guy has been consistent with watford and that league is stronger than belgium league, tom is very skillfull and confident with the ball, he will do alot better than onyedika that uses 5 hours to town with the ball,

However in abcent of fikayo ndidi onyeka and iwobi would have more compact and balance than onyedika inclusion, the inresponsibility of the deffense also messed things for legendery finidi, to worsen the situation his dicision to sub out king alexander iwobi the midfield emperor which many blind fans dont respect, shot his foot in that game,

I think that lost was forgivable for many reasons, one is the fact that the players contributed 90 percent to their failure, two is that it can be atributed to the fact that the team underated their opponent after the first goal, three is that without osihmen, no coach have been able to sicure a competative victory with the supereagles after eguavon group stage 100 percent record in cameroun 2021 every other attempt have been at best draw, this has alot to do with failure of other strikers not turning up, the coaches can not head or shot the ball to the net by their selves.

Three lessons I learnt from finidi two competative games,

One is that we only have one strikers in the name of victor osihmen, our second options are as worse as the chinese female national team strikers, we need to think above the box to select Top strikers as a replacement for vr9 in his abcense, we should not rely on goal numbers alone to invite strikers, this is where siasia is a better option for now, see how he trow in sadiq from no where in the olimpic and he debuted ogbuke and emenike, these are strikers with little or no goal numbers at the time they where invited but they have strong footballing character, and they didnt need years to give result.
I expected finidi to invite imade osarekhoe a striker who tomented him in two clashes in the domestic league(enyimba vs insurance) and also delivered in caf confedration cup,he should have been given the nod ahead of those yahoo boys,
Isaac sucess is also a better option for his rugedity power and his willines to play for his team mates, he have gathered expi from spanish, english leagues and now serie A, he did well with the under 17 and under 20, he also have been tested by rohr before his injuries and he delivered, I cant remember him failing our colors, he deserve chances.

Second lesson is that you cant remove iwobi in the supereagles midfield and succeed, yes I agree he is not pirlo or zidane neighter is he a magictian like his uncle jayjay, but only a dummy or a blind fan will fail to realise that iwobi is the best midfieder Nigeria have in this entire universe at the moment, even if you invite eze and olise of now, iwobi long expi of championsleague, uefa cup, three nations cup, premierleague regular games is not to be compared to any Nigerian player at the moment take it or live it, as for eagles toiling with iwobi as a coach will hot ur carea, as fan your heart will pound immediately iwobi is out of the middle, there is no team in africa
that will not start iwobi, cotedvoir, algeria, egypt, ghana etc will always start the genius, the only player available for us that is closer to him in his allround carracter at this moment is tom dele bashiru of watford, fikayo sinior brother who was part of 2019 u20 team, even fikayo who is better upfront, cannot fill in the gap of iwobi for now.

Third lesson learnt is that osayi samuel is better in the left back than right, honestly he is the best nigerian left back I have seen after the likes of babayaro and taiye taiwo,
He realy surprised me, I think he should retain that position, he is even better than aina and saidu in that leftback, he was so comfortable in diffense and attack, he has never been that confident, it was like living the cat out of the bag, Aina should keep the right and osayi should be in the left, bassey and benjamin should keep our center in future.

In conclusion, I think siasia should take the team further, if not, finidi should return, there is no new coach who is alien to africa football that can do magic in this short time, we shouldnt decive our self, siasia should either be assisted by aigbogun and salisu, or nff should settle finidi and osihmen and reconcile the team and him since they cant afford the other africa experienced coaches at the moment.

My prefered line up in our coming games

      Nwabali

      Aina Balogun Bassey Osayi

      Frank Iwobi
      Fikayo

      Chuks. Osihmen, lookman,

Ndidi should replace fikayo in second halfs to balance the midfield when needed, the likes of simon, ejuke, tela are also options for wings, benjamin should replace either balogun or ajayi who ever gets the start among both to gain some expi, azubuike should join the midfielders in the team

I wish our belove team big sucess in their quest to qualify for the prestigiouse copa del mondo。

You are a confirmed OLODO RAPATA for suggesting Siasia/Aigbohun to coach SE.

Haba what is your problems in Nigeria? Dem curse you abi wetin?

How can you be suggesting someone who have been out in the cold, banned for participating in anything connected to football for about 5 years suddenly be chosen to lead an Ailing Super Eagle that urgently needs redemption ?

        Collins ID,

It’s always nice to read your contributions. I wholeheartedly agree with your appreciation of elements of Finidi’s failed short tenure as Super Eagles coach.

The game against South Africa was the most vibrant, uplifting and expansive performance produced by the Super Eagles in long time from my perspective. In the game against Benin, we were bossing it and firmly in the driving seat before carelessness cost us dearly in conceding needless goals.

I have mocked Finidi as the Super Eagles recently, not because I don’t appreciate what he tried to achieve, it’s just because I felt and still feel as a coach, the Super Eagles’ job is too big for him to handle at this time which explains why he failed miserably to manufacture minimum 2 points from those 2 games.

And you are right in your critique of Onuachu. Upon repeat viewing, I appreciate his efforts better in those games. We came agonisingly close to winning the South Africa match with our midfield finally proving creative in in both games.

Regarding Finidi, I try to avoid ad-hominem attacks. I ridicule his competency in relation to the Super Eagles role but my respect for the man and appreciation of the positive side of his game remains.

On the part of your comment recommending Siasia for the role, I respectably submit that you misfired. The bribery scandal will sadly always be a stain that Siasia will struggle to shake off. Add to that the fact he has been inactive for a while. I personally don’t think Finidi will like to return to the Super Eagles role at this time. Club football is where he belongs for now.

I think this Swedish guy is a manageable option – definitely better than Siasia. He was once named the 17th best coach in world football by a reputable media agency. He has led a team to the quarter-finals of a world cup and has been active in international football. He is not without his shortcomings but on the balance of probability, I think he is a decent option.

I have said it severally that I embrace this appointment (if it comes to fruition).

For those who know me, my seal of approval will not insulate this coach from my hammer of criticism.

Again, Austin Eguavoen either has his man or has had his way. Another coach who, like Eguavoen, recently failed to qualify his team for tournaments once his 4-4-2 formation that worked like lightening earlier on in his career with Sweden.

Tell me, what is it with this obsession for 4-4-2? It that the only philosophy in world football?

Now Scorenigeria.com.ng are reporting that Eguavoen will have more ‘hands-on’ role with the coach to advise on ‘suitable players’ for the team’s strategic direction.

Una for kuku give the role to Eguavoen and save money because the NFF is on queer-street.

I pray this Eguavoen-in-Andersson clothing works sha.

In fairness, different coaches apply and handle the same formation differently. I think this Swedish guy will serve the same formation with a touch of finesse, focus and fortitude.

I expect he should be better placed tactically to identify pitfalls of his formation and take remedial actions far swifter than our local coaches.

But when you see the way Sweden lost 3:0 to a ten man Azerbaijan just like year, it conjures mental images of the Super Eagles losing to Central Africa Republic under Rohr. That loss enough would have dissuaded many countries from handing over the responsibility of their national team to this tactician.

      But NFF knows better.

In the words of several contributors on this platform, ‘na to siddon dey look we dey’.

@Stan and Awe Rafiu, good try guys! Both of you are terrible in French by the way but I salute your courage in trying to learn a new language as adults. French is not written as it’s spoken and travelling around French speaking countries doesn’t help your understanding of it. The best way to learn French is to study it in schoool. And @ Pompei, abeg leave this brothers alone o. They are only trying to retain the few French they have learnt and understood biko. “Pour bien apprendre et comprendre la langue francaise, il faut aller a l’ecole oubien aller habiter en France les gars! Sam, I don’t have a problem with anyone learning a new language.
French is a beautiful language. I am also learning it small small.
The question is – Should French be spoken on an English web site?
Imagine visiting a Russian site, and you start commenting in Arabic?
Even Mr. Macaroni will remove his glasses, and ask you – ARE YOU NORMAL?
The article is written in English, but some individuals choose to comment in French, others Spanish, yet others Russian, me I kukuma throw in my Azerbaijani. Then others come in with Farsi, Hindi, Portuguese, Tagalog, Chinese, Swahili?
How enjoyable will this site be if that happens?
CSN would have transformed into BABEL. A CITADEL OF CONFUSION AND CHAOS.
If you want to practice your French, go to a French site. Or beg CSN to open up a French version. Let’s keep this one English for English speaking users, so we can all enjoy the experience.
E jo nitori Olorun. If you want to package and pose say you sabi speak French, do that on a French site, where it is appropriate.

Now Anderson also refuses interference from Eguadiola and NFF. Deal is broken and Eguadiola is the coach as planned because they know no coach wants corruption except them. They see SE and SF as NFF agency.

The macabre dance of shame continues. In the end, it will be on record that Gusau’s NFF administration spent an entire tenure recruiting a coach for the Super Eagles.

What an achievement it would be!

Plus Gusau would probably have succeeded in installing Bosso as the SE coach (which is his real agenda as he has penciled the permanent NFF coaching staffer as assistant to Eguavoen or whoever comes in, partly to understudy them, so when the coach leaves, his candidate can then be ‘promoted’ as SE coach)

We’re struggling to play draws with Rwanda and Lesotho and losing to Benin on neutral ground, yet some people are saying qualifying for AFCON is a stroll in the park, and when you disagree with them, they start to brag about our exploits in the 80s and 90s. Are we in the 80s and 90s? At a time when the Tanzanian league is now a Mecca of football to our local players and are almost at the bottom of a WCQ group that does not even have any of the North African or West African top sides or teams like Cameroon or Congo. Continue dreaming!
