CAFWCL: Edo Queens Beat Sundowns, Book Semi-Final Spot

Edo Queens rallied from a goal down to beat holders Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their final group game at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The win earned Moses Aduku’s a place in the semi-final of Africa’s biggest club competition.

The Nigerian champions finished top of Group B with seven points from three games.

Melinda Kgadiete put Sundowns ahead in the 28th minute.

Chioma Olise missed a penalty for Edo Queens in the 54th minute.

The South Africans looked to be coasting home to an important victory before Edo Queens scored two late goals to secure maximum points in the game.

Emem Essien equalised five minutes into stoppage time, while substitute Mary Mamudu fired home the winning goal few minutes later.

Egypt’s FC Masar finished second in the group after a 2-1 victory over Commercial Bank FC of Ethiopia.

Mamelodi Sundowns and CBE FC have been eliminated from the competition.

The right comment I was looking for. All those prophets of doom  already predicting negativity…I hope you choke on your hatred  for local coaches. I don’t know why people are so eager to put anything about local coaches under the foot. Same thing they did with the U-20 boys, same thing now with Edo queens, I hope Super Eagles and Eguavon put a nail in the coffin of all these plastics fans.

The will never analyze football as it is meant to be, rather, it is attacks upon attacks on local coaches and players.

Let’s clear this up once and for all: the performance of a team dictates the kind of post-match analysis they get—simple cause and effect! Yet somehow, some folks here act like pointing out flaws in a team’s play is a crime punishable by exile. Criticism isn’t condemnation, people. It’s called holding the team accountable. Think of it like parenting: you praise your child when they excel, and when they mess up, you correct them. But some of you only want to hear praise, even when there are glaring issues that need addressing. Let’s be honest: anyone with a real desire for excellence knows that turning a blind eye to mediocrity is the quickest way to stagnate.

Take Edo Queens’ match against that Egyptian club was, let’s just say, uninspiring. Technical errors, tactical cluelessness, and an overall lack of urgency—they were practically begging for criticism. Were we supposed to hand them flowers and sing their praises? Nope. Even in their game against Sundowns, where they showed tremendous resilience and determination, the mistakes were hard to ignore: wastefulness in front of goal, feeble attempts that wouldn’t scare a Sunday League goalie, and passes so wayward they might have been aimed at the stands. Sure, they fought hard, but football isn’t just about grit; it’s about execution.

Now, here’s the kicker: some of you will cheer wildly when the team scrapes a win, completely ignoring the cracks in the performance. “Hosanna!” you cry, like they just won the Champions League. Then the next match comes, those same cracks cost them the game, and suddenly it’s “Crucify them!” The emotional back-and-forth is exhausting to watch. Honestly, it’s like dealing with a soap opera audience. Meanwhile, there are others who keep their heads straight—who analyze performances objectively, whether in victory or defeat. These are the people who see football for what it is: a game of constant improvement, not a series of mood swings.

Here’s the hard truth: no team—Edo Queens, Super Eagles, or even Real Madrid—can improve without honest, constructive criticism. Pretending everything is fine when it’s not is just asking for failure. If Edo Queens are to rise to the next level, they need fans and analysts who will call them out, not fans who will drown their shortcomings in sugar. Excellence doesn’t grow in a comfort zone; it thrives where the truth, however harsh, is spoken loudly and clearly.

So, next time someone critiques any team representing us, don’t clutch your pearls. Instead, ask yourself: “Are they wrong, or am I just too emotionally invested to hear the truth?” Because, let’s be real, sweeping errors under the rug doesn’t help anyone—not the players, not the coaches, and definitely not the fans.

Determination, Doggedness, Desire….Congrats to Edo Queens.

      What a game…!

From the brink of elimination to the top of the group. No wonder they say football is like biscuit, you never know where it will crack. Quite ironic the crack eventually came from a veteran Bayana Banyana goal keeper

I wasn’t gonna stick out my neck for them, especially against multiple champions Sundowns Ladies, but they threw everything at it and never gave up till the end.

Congratulations once again to the team.

I hope they’ll still have enough in their talk for another gruelling meet-up against TP Mazembe on Tuesday

Great effort by Edo Queens. I actually thought they were out after my darling Chioma Olise missed the penalty.

But, like a phoenix, they rose from the ashes of double setbacks to hit Mamelodi Sundowns where it hurt.

They started very well, pressing high, choking the midfield and winning aerial battles in defence.

But, in the best period of play Mamelodi Sundowns could string together, Edo Queens fell to a rapid passing routines and a wicked cross connected powerfully to propel the South Africans ahead.

Credit to Edo Queens bench, they made substitutions and changed the formation to provide much needed width.

Another sweetheart of mine Goodness Osigwe was introduced and she ruffled the South Africans on the left.

Edo Queens would not allow the South Africans to breathe with relentless pressure in the second half which led to the missed penalty and the late 2 goals.

The South Africans resorted to time wasting shenanigans which failed to bail them out.

Edo Queens defenders were simply awesome, shooting out of the back in anticipation to intercept passes and not allow the South Africans any headway when they surged towards Nigerian 18 yard box.

Edo Queens wingers were incredible particularly that number 7.

Olise is becoming a powerhouse in midfield.

Well done Edo Queens. You made us proud.

You want to use foreign based professionals play African Champions league?

The arguments made in favour of foreign based players is that the coaches should not insist on fielding home based players in international games when our best legs are abroad.

Congrats to Edo Queens for making us proud.

Qualifying from the group stage of CAF Women’s CL (albeit fortuitously) is his validation of the fact that home-based players are better…..LMAOooo.

          Mediocrity at its peak…!!!

      Hahahaha…success indeed has many friends….LMAOoo.

I have scoured the internet to search where these hypocrites who are suddenly polluting this place ever offered a word of support for Edo Queens previously, but I found none…LMAOoo

Suddenly, they are out of the holes where they hid all these while acting as if the Edo Queens’ previous performance has been palatable to them.

Sundowns goalkeeper dropping a howler for Edo Queens to equalize in the 95th minute and avoid group stage elimination has suddenly become a result of the astuteness of local coaches and a confirmation of how outstanding and world-class home-based players are…….Lmao.

I thought Nigeria was supposed to be no 1 in female football in Africa….? Why then is a qualification from the group stage of a female football competition in Africa now generating so much jubilation and a false sense of vindication for these hypocrites….???

Useless narcissist, i for one am not interested in the crap you typed here. You and your cohorts clearly know what you said about the team. Should we resend the contents you all said, most especially not believing in the team. What happened to you eating humble pie, abi it was too hot when you were eating for you to come here and start spilling gibberish. And so what if the keeper dropped the ball, how is that anyone’s problem, she had a job to do and she screwed it up, so you expected the Edo girls to kick the ball away. Have said it that they need to return you back to the heating cell, your brain is very frozen at this stage. You not thinking straight. Had it being they lost yesterday, how no how you would have bombarded the page by rubbing it in people’s faceless. Shameless ass
