Defending champion Novak Djokovic hopes his shoulder issues won’t be a lasting issue after struggling through to the US Open third round.
The Serbian, who is also the top seed at Flushing Meadows, needed to receive treatment on a shoulder injury three times during his second-round match with Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero, although he was still able to record a convincing straight-sets victory, prevailing 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Djokovic admitted after the win that he had feared, at certain stages of the match, that he would be forced to retire, but ultimately was able to dig deep and remain on course for his fourth US Open crown. “It was definitely affecting my serve and my backhand,” said Djokovic.
“I didn’t know if I would be able to finish the match. I’m really glad I have.” The world number one will face either compatriot Dusan Lajovic or American Denis Kudla in the third round on Friday and he is hoping he will have enough time to recover ahead of that contest.
“The good thing about Grand Slams is you have a day off in between the matches,” the 32-year-old added. “I’m hoping that with proper medical help and treatments, I’ll be able to get myself in a better state than I was today.”
