Exclusive: Forget 2022 World Cup Failure, Focus On 2023 AFCON Qualifiers –Garba Tells NFF

Austin AkhilomenBy Austin AkhilomenApril 7, 202246 Comments1 Min Read

Former Nigerian winger, Garba Lawal has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to put behind the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and focus on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Recall that Nigeria failed to qualify for Qatar after the team’s ability to beat the Black Stars of Ghana at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

However, in an interview with Completesports.com, Garba started that the NFF should not duel too much on the World Cup but turn attention on how to make the senior national team strong again.

“I don’t think the NFF should still be thinking of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for Qatar 2022 when we know that the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers will commence soon, the former Roda JC star told Completesports.com.

“Yes, it was sad that the Super Eagles won’t be at the World Cup, however, we don’t have time to start crying over spilled milk.

” Eagles will rise again in a matter of time and I know the team will make up for their mistakes.”

I will continue to repeat it, the NFF needs a Garba to join the Eguavoen coaching crew to redeem the Super Eagles but they must be given at least 2 years and not 3 months. Amuneke should be delegated to u17 or 23, this is the position of Nigerians.

Thank you Garba Lawal, it is obvious you believe in continuity but the problem right now is, no one is sure if Eguavoen is still interested in the Super Eagles job.

@Lenukwe, if coach Eguavoen isn’t interested, NFF should beg him. As far as Nigeria is concerned today, he is the most qualified coach unless the NFF is interested in a non rated ex-players like Seyi who is only mouthing and has no recognisable credentials to put on the table.

Having won an Afcon medal and taking the Supet Eagles from 36th to 30th position, fifa ranking just within a spate of few months, should tell us something good is in the offing. I think the NFF should open proper negotiation with Augustine regarding time frame and incentives after all, he only served on interim level so far. They should permanent his appointment for say 4 years so that he will begin to explore our domestic league which is very germain now that we have only 3 months to commence preparations for 2023 Afcon.

NFF HAVE NEVER BE SERIOUS ONE DAY. THEY ALWAYS EMBARKED ON FIRE BRIGADE APPROACH.
      IMMEDIATELY AFTER AFCON FAILURE:
*** CAMEROON, GHANA DIDN’T WASTE TIME IN RESTRUCTURING THEIR TECHNICAL CREWS. AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, BOTH COUNTRIES QUALIFIED FOR WORILD CUP. NIGERIA ANNOUNCED PASEIRO AS SUPER EAGLE TECHNICAL ADVISER BEFORE AFCON SO THAT HE WILL TAKE OVER FOR WORLD CUP PLAY-OFF, BUT AT THE END, PASEIRO IS NO WHERE TO BE FOUND FOR W/CUP PLAY-OFF.
*** IVORY COAST, BURKINA-FASO, TUNISIA PUT AWAY THEIR AFCON FAILURE AND BEGIN TO PREPARE FOR 2023 AFCON QUALIFICATIONS BY PLAYING GRADE-A FRIENDLY WITH BIG COUNTRIES LIKE FRANCE, ENGLAND, POLAND. BUT NIGERIA HAVE NOT GETTING COACH PRESENTLY TALKLESS OF THINKING OF WHICH PLAYERS WILL BE INVITED FOR QUALIFICATIONS.
WE HAVE NOT BEEN TAKING THINGS FOR SERIOUS IN THIS COUNTRY.
      GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

My brother, NFF needs to beg Augustine Eguavoen because as it stands today, no super eagles former player is as qualified or has better credentials if we are to go on merit. And sincerely speaking, we have only between now and June to play our first Afcon23 qualifier. It means preparations need to start in earnest. I hope BFF is listening.

SENTIMENTALITY OF LOCAL NIGERIA COACHES WILL NOT MAKE ANY NIGERIA TEAMS TO SUCCEED IN ANY COMPETITIONS.
**NFF SHOULD EMPLOY A STANDARD FOREIGN COACH THAT KNOWS ABOUT AFRICA FOOTBALL AND NIGERIA PLAYERS HOME & ABROAD. This is very important for any foreigner to succeed not just any foreigner.
*** OR NFF SHOULD EMULATE THE PATTERN OF SENEGAL THAT EMPLOY CONSORTIUM OF FOREIGN TRAINERS assisted by TONY SYLVA & NABY TRAORE

      • Chike on April 7, 2022 4:48 pm

I can understand how you feel. But foreign coaches from hindsight hasn’t been a success in Nigeria. I think it was just Westerhof/Bonfere, others were failures. Painstakingly working with domestic coaches still has a better appeal and that would collaborate with the local content policy. What I think we must insist on is that the NFF should give the local coaches more time and space to perform. Here, late Stephen Keshi comes to mind.

The truth is Eguavoen remains the most qualified coach for the Super Eagles and I can understand that is what they are saying. Some have already asked, do you have a better coach other then Eguavoen for the vacant position?

Don’t mind the fool he has nothing to contribute apart from insulting those who are better than his tribe. The moment he hears NFF he begins to run mad. I wish I know the criteria the NFF is going to use to appoint a local Technical Adviser otherwise, Eguavoen seem suited.

I don’t understand why people will start attacking the NFF on here , while there are people who still advocate for a coach who lack basic knowledge of coaching, I mean how can someone be advocating a four years contract for a coach like this ? are you not worst that Pinnick himself? Nigerian football is built on a feeble foundation and it need reconstruction, imaging a technical director who has a zero coaching technical ability , what input will he bring into the system?
