Ellis Genge knows he has big boots to fill after replacing Mako Vunipola in England’s matchday squad for Saturday’s Six Nations clash with Wales.
Leicester Tigers prop Genge has been the man selected to fill the void left by Vunipola, who has been ruled out of the rest of this year’s tournament after injuring his ankle against France last time out.
The 24-year-old does not boast a wealth of international experience after only winning his sixth cap against Ireland earlier this month. He acknowledges he faces a daunting prospect in trying to replace Vunipola – a man he describes as the best prop in the world.
“I’m not going to say I am going to jump into Mako’s boots because he is unreal,” Genge was quoted as saying by the BBC.
“He is probably the best in our position in the world and I don’t think you can replace what he has done, especially off the pitch, he has been a bit of a glue for us. “But I will give it my best crack and I will be myself.”
Genge knows the most important thing is winning Saturday’s match at the Principality Stadium, particularly as both England and Wales currently boast 100% records in this year’s Six Nations.
“Winning in general is what sport is about,” Genge added. “They are a passionate bunch, the Welsh, and I am sure they are looking forward to us coming over the bridge.”
